Skategame development: grind mapping ~ This is how I plan the various grind tricks to work. Depending on your rotation when you land, it’ll round off to the nearest 45 degrees (the nearest ‘grindangle’), and if the UP or DOWN key is being held it’ll choose the nose or tail variant (top or bottom row) instead. One or two people might notice that Willy grinds and Losi grinds have been left out, and therefore hurricanes and sugarcanes. This is because who cares.Also since flips were completed, I’ve made progress with a couple of other components of the game - got a control scheme kind of down, and have made a generalised ‘Keytapper’ thing to help track sequences and combinations of keypresses and keyreleases. How combos are handled by the way you hit the keys can make a massive difference to the feel of the game, so having this Keytapper has made tweaking things so much easier.

Dogfoxthing ~ Drew this on Friday, but it came out kind of wrong. Its back foot is nice though. The skate game will be kicking off again soonish, but I now have a tumble tree to attend to, as well as some awesome holidays to go on. And that’s that.

It works on the dashboard or on most permalink pages, and you can sproing the branches around, filter notes by comments, save the tree as a picture blah blah blah. Skategame development: flip trick mapping ~ Uuuurrrgh, uh, well, this is a map of possible flip trick names for BS360 through to FS360, just for the tricks I’m going to include (no impossibles, casperflips, pressureflips, lateflips or varial multiflips), and also not taking into account latespins, stances, special names or 90 degree landing variations… I guess this is why even the biggest skateboarding games just stick with ‘POP SHOVE IT + BS 180’ even though nobody ever talks like that.

Mission for today - get as many of these flips animated and in the game as I can. Despite the number of combinations, there are really only 8 to animate. And then put up a GIF tonight.

Skategame development: animation editor ~ Finally animating with this thing! So a few posts back I mentioned a custom animation manager I made to animate numbers rather than movieclip properties - what I didn’t show was how that information is stored. Take a look at picture #3 (with the green writing on white) and you can see how silly it would be to animate just by writing that out by hand. Which is why I needed an editor.

See the second picture to see how it came out - lots of tracks with keyframes and standard stuff. This editor was also made in Flash, and the three little robot guys at the top (one normal, one nollie, one switch) move around depending on what was animated and where the playhead is. You can select and drag multiple frames, copy and paste, undo and redo and such. Definitely needed an undo/redo stack in there. Once you’re done, it saves all the changes back into that big lump of text in picture #3, ready for the game to use.

And yeah, picture #1 is the first bit of animation for this guy. Ollie ollie ollie. Now, to map out all the flip tricks / grabs / grinds…
